Gum Disease Control
DR. IGOR OCHEV, SAN RAFAEL DENTIST

“Can I treat gum disease at home?”

Yes, but not entirely. Plaque can turn into tartar quickly. In fact, it only takes 24 hours! Even if you have a strict home regimen to help prevent plaque and tartar from forming, it’s not enough for those hard-to-reach places. No matter what, buildup happens. That’s why you need professional gum disease control to do the heavy lifting.

CONTROLLING GUM DISEASE
What to Expect

If Dr. Igor Ochev diagnoses you with periodontitis, we may recommend three to four periodontal cleanings a year. At these visits, we check the pocket depths carefully to ensure that they’re healthy. We also remove the plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line that can only be removed with special dental instruments.

In addition, your maintenance appointment usually includes:

Cleanings

Gingivitis is the first stage of periodontal disease. If the disease is caught early and no damage has been done, we recommend two regular cleanings. You also receive instructions on improving your daily oral hygiene habits and getting regular dental cleanings.

Polishing

As the final step of a cleaning, we polish your teeth to remove surface stains, plaque, and biofilm.

Oral cancer screening

We check your face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.

Examination for tooth decay

Because gum disease increases the risk of tooth decay, we check the surfaces of your teeth for any decay.

Examination of restorations

We check the condition and stability of your current fillings, crowns, and other restorations.

Oral hygiene recommendations

We recommend oral hygiene aids such as electric toothbrushes, special periodontal brushes, fluorides, rinses, and other aids if we think you need them.

Good oral hygiene practices and regularly-scheduled cleanings are essential in keeping gum disease under control. Not only that,  it can reduce your risk of other diseases that can affect your overall wellness. Here at EvoSmile, we believe that health is wealth. Beyond controlling gum disease, we hope you’ll choose us as your partner in your overall oral health.
